Feast of the Holy Family – Two-Minute Homily: Fr Leonard Uzuegbu

Few days ago we celebrated Christmas, a day
that God in the person of Jesus came in the flesh and became part of us in a human family. This Family of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, is
what we celebrate today as the Holy Family. We call it “HOLY” not only because Jesus
was part of this family, but also because of the life of faith, love and obedience to
God that was manifest in it. According to the Gospel reading the parents
of Jesus took with them, the prescribed gifts as they presented Jesus to the Lord in the
temple, in fulfilment of the law. There a devout man Simeon, who had waited
for the fulfilment of the Lord’s promise, took Jesus in his hands; and praised God for
letting him see Christ, the Light to his people. This light is the pillar, the strength and
the hope of family life. When Jesus, the light is welcomed into the
family, peace and love reign. That is not to say that the divine light immunes
us from the reality of family difficulties and challenges, be it; unfulfilled dreams,
pains and family breakdown, even death. Rather Jesus, the light that has come into
the world, gives us courage and helps us to cope and never loose hope when hit by the
storms of life; just as Mary, Joseph and Jesus did when they had to flee from Herod to Egypt
by night and other unpalatable events that happened in their lives. May our families be like yours, Jesus, Mary
and Joseph; a family where love, respect and obedience to God’s law reigned.
