Local teen gathers donations for Harvey relief effort


As Hurricane Irma approaches landfall . those displaced by Hurricane Harvey are still in need of hygiene items, food and more. News 8’s Madalyn O’Neill shows us local efforts to help . which may benefit future Irma victims as well. We’re collecting donations for Hurricane Harvey victims if you’re interested. Outside Festival Foods on Copeland Avenue in La Crosse . We’re right over here by this yellow truck. Nineteen-year-old Zak Chaouki has a big truck to fill. there we go, But he’s not worried. I’m gonna do some banking then I’ll grab my truck and drop it off. — thank you so much! ZAK CHAOUKI We’re gonna really be able to get this thing filled so I’m really excited about it. While the approaching Hurricane *Irma* is now on everyone’s minds … KATHLEEN FAAS Oh heavens yes . It’s a shame now down in Florida they’re going to get it too. JEFF PETERSON I got friends in Florida. It’s something you think about all the time. Chaouki says Harvey victims are still in need . of non-perishable foods . hygiene products . cleaning supplies . and even items to keep away the boredom in shelters. nice all right — there you go — awesome thank you so much! Obviously, we can’t take away what happened to them but we can gather together as a community and do something great. A lot of people don’t have a lot of money but they have extra things they’re not using so that really makes it nice if you can donate, people willing to take things down. I think they’re doing a wonderful job and I commend them for doing it. . that says a lot for the younger generation. Chaouki also has Hurricane Irma on his mind. He says the Texas shelter he’s coordinating with may end up driving some of these supplies to Florida. So it’s really supporting both when someone brings a donation. But still . it’s next stop, Texas. The worst always tends to bring out the best in us. Thank you. have a good day. thank you you too In La Crosse, Madalyn O’Neill, News 8 Chaouki and his friend Austin Thompson will be outside the Festival Foods on Copeland Avenue Saturday and Sunday collecting cash and other donations from in the morning to at night.
