Rep. Cunningham’s Ocean Gala remarks

I would like to welcome to the stage
Congressman Joe Cunningham to help us pay tribute to Senator Hollings.
Congressman Cunningham represents Senator Hollings beloved Palmetto State and it’s
district spans much of the state’s Atlantic coast so please join me in
walking the congressman to the stage. Thank you so much Chris.
Wow, it is an honor to be here tonight to pay tribute to Senator Hollings, who was
such an inspiration to me in my own life in my career. Senator Hollings- he cared
deeply about our oceans and our coasts, he helped found the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, and was a steadfast advocate for the agency
throughout his career in Congress. Emphasizing practical conservationism, Senator Hollings spearheaded extraordinary efforts to protect our
marine environment. These efforts extend back to our shared home of the lowcountry with the creation of the ACE Basin, but they rippled across the
country. They include the protection of the National Estuarine Research Reserve,
the enactment of the Coastal Zone Management Act in 1972, which helps us
preserve, protect and restore our nation’s coast, including the Great Lakes
passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Oceans Dumping Act, the original
Magnuson Act and the Sustainable Fisheries Act. Now- Now- look, I could carry on all night,
talk about the accomplishments that Senator Hollings made, but there’s not
enough liquor in this bar to allow us to do that, so I want to go about this a
different way. I want to go about this a little bit
different. Stand up if you work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. Please- Please remain standing. Stand up if you are- stand up if you are or were a Nancy Foster Scholar or a Hollings Scholarship
Winner. Now stand up- stand up if you are a
recipient of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Hollings
Ocean Awareness Award. Now stand up if you believe that America
needs sustainable fisheries. There you go! Stand up if you are proud- stand up
if you’re proud that America regulates what is dumped or disposed of into our
ocean to keep our beaches safe and clean. Now listen, just look around
here tonight, all of you standing perfectly demonstrates the impact Senator Hollings made on our ocean, our coast, our planet, and generations of
conservationists. His love of the ocean was not just about South Carolina, or our
nation today. He always, ALWAYS, had his eyes on the future. Thank You Senator
Hollings for making this world a better place. For giving us so many tools to
conserve and protect our beloved oceans. Thank you, Senator Hollings, for giving
each and every one of us a place to stand. Good Evening.
